When should you see a gynecologist? Most women see a gynecologist for a pelvic exam at least every few years, with sexually active women visiting the doctor every year. But what are some signs you should see your gynecologist? With certain symptoms, you should schedule an appointment.
1. Pelvic Pain
2. Bleeding-irregular or heavy
3. Signs of Infection
4. Unmanageable PMS/Menopause Symptoms
5. Birth Control and Fertility Questions
Pain
Pain may be a signal that something may be wrong. Pelvic pain and period pain that is difficult to control are definite signs that you should see your gynecologist.
What is normal for period pain? During your period, some cramping and discomfort is normal. Most women can manage it with over-the-counter pain medications. However, sharp pain and persistent pain should be addressed when it interferes with your normal work, school, and daily activities.
Pelvic pain during normal activities, such as exercise and sexual intercourse, should also be addressed by a gynecologist. She can examine you to find the cause of pelvic pain, which can range from endometriosis and uterine fibroids to an ectopic pregnancy or pelvic inflammatory disease. Whether it is acute or chronic, your gynecologist will find the cause and provide solutions for relieving pelvic pain.
Unusual/Irregular Bleeding
Irregular, excessive, and unusual vaginal bleeding when you are not pregnant should also be addressed by a gynecologist. If you are pregnant and experiencing bleeding, see your obstetrician. Examples of signs to be seen include spotting between periods and bleeding after intercourse. These may be caused by fibroids or possibly by a birth control device, such as an IUD.
Consider what is normal for your period and see your gynecologist if heavy periods makes your life difficult to manage. Left unchecked, this type of bleeding zaps your energy and iron levels, and it may be a sign of an issue that is treatable. Likewise, having no period for more than two months or periods that are too close together can be reviewed.
Signs of Infection
If you experience signs of infection, you should make an appointment with your gynecologist to get treatment, as most infections will not go away by themselves. Symptoms of yeast infections, which are very common, can include vaginal itching, discharge, and a bad or “off” odor. If you detect any rashes, growths, blisters, or bumps on or around the genital area, these could be signs of an STI, staph, or other infection. Unusual redness or swelling should also be addressed.
Unmanageable PMS/Menopause Symptoms
Women of all ages may have symptoms from PMS, perimenopause, and menopause. Regardless of where you are in life, when your symptoms become unmanageable, it is time to be seen by your gynecologist. As we mentioned, there are things that can be done about unbearable cramps, excessive periods, and raging PMS. There is no reason to suffer in silence. If you are taking sick days from work or school, make an appointment to address your symptoms with medical guidance. Likewise, older women who are having a hard time managing perimenopause or menopause symptoms, such as hot flashes, vaginal dryness, and difficulty sleeping may be able to get some relief from hormonal shifts from the gynecologist.
Birth Control and Fertility Questions
Gynecologists are doctors who care for reproductive health, and that includes preventing pregnancy and fertility. Whether you want to defer family planning or learn more about fertility as you plan your family, reach out to your gynecologist. She can prescribe birth control that works for your lifestyle and health considerations and help you identify possible fertility issues.
